Custom Tiles–Updates and New Features

One thing that people saw about Windows Phone sometimes, is that it is not very customizable.  While I disagree whole heartedly, I also like to make it a little simpler for people to add customizations to their Windows Phone devices.  With my Custom Tiles web app you have customizability that no other phone has.  You can add a lot of color, custom icons, and custom text to your WP home screen while also making them work as useful links to the websites that you use everyday.

Help Tips

You will notice that I added a ? to the top right of http://zqp.me/custom-tiles so that you can quickly see the steps it takes to start adding some flare to your WP home screen.  Tapping on the ? will open an easily listed out set of instructions for adding your favorite websites to your home screen with a heavily customizable tile.

Unicode Character Help

I made Custom Tiles support Unicode Characters a long time ago but, I know that many people do not realize the power that this added.  So to help you all out I added a quick access panel to a variety of different Unicode characters that will help you to customize your WP7 or WP8 home screen.  I will also take requests from people to find more specific Unicode characters and add or remove certain ones from the quick list.  To access the quick list of Uni’s you simply tap on the ‘Title’ input box and it will appear at the top of your screen for you.  Then all you have to do is tap on the Unicode Character that you like and the rest is magic.

Have fun customizing your home screens.  If you would like to share some of your creations, it would be greatly appreciated.  Also if you have any feature requests, feel free to submit them in the comments or on Twitter @Brad_Billman.

Microsoft Surface Blog Post With Dictation

If I am going to try to do a dictation mode post. Dictation for the service with windows of a doesn’t like the word surface or water. Add to that as. Th the dictation experience on the Microsoft service is this allows a Lazard carol all full. The sound of a fire hold the surface with my mouse to the microphone to cushion works quite well. I live. This really makes me want to try to cushion on a different machine and even just was a different microphone because I’m not sure if the software is bad or fish microphone really to scatter mirror will.  Talking directly into the microphone works to sort also some of your options are nice for correcting words.  That is when it works in a patent suit attention of the haven’t even though it has to come at a dinner and hendershot speaks of the period.  The only a reason I could see to use dictation is as you’re missing fingers will perhaps or to use as a creativity tool because of the brain processing for speech rather than typing or in addition to tucker.

Overall it looks like the software is pretty good and I have spoken this entire post without doing any corrections as you can see from the first paragraph it is miserable the differences May 1 paragraph was about 2 feet and from a safe hand of this last paragraph of his was my mouth right up to the microphone.  Th fifth.Publish

Custom Tiles Updated – Now Supports HTML Entities Hex and Decimal Code ✌

Want to make the home screen of your Windows Phone even more attractive? I’ve made some exciting changes to the Custom Tiles web app that I have built ➠ here. If you haven’t seen it, it is a must for Windows Phone fans. It is a great, easy way to add custom tiles to your start screen for website shortcuts. Currently, you simply just the web address that you want to create the shortcut for, the title, subtitle, color, and pin it to your start screen.

As you can see below I have used a few of the HTML entity icons to show just a little bit of what can be done now with Custom Tiles. There is a link below to a good resource for the html entity, hex, and decimal codes for these icons but here is one example. ✌ = ✌

Windows Phone Custom Tiles Web App - Website Tiles
Here are some sample tiles that you can make with the new and improved Custom Tiles web app.

More Customizable Website Shortcuts

I have just added support for HTML entity hex and decimal code so that you can add a slew of different icons to your start screen. A good reference to these characters can be found here ✓.

Techniques for Perfecting Your Custom Tiles

I started thinking about it and realized that you can easily pan and zoom to position the text/icons exactly where you will want them to be. Later on I would like to add more colors, font color change, and independently changing the position of the title and sub-title. I have been thinking about using cookies to remember some of your choices to make your process faster. And implementing an auto complete for some common urls to make that process easier. If there is any other functionality you would like to see please let me know. I think that adding the icon support increases the usefullness 10 fold for this web app.

Custom Website Tiles For Windows Phone

Want to customize the web tiles on your Windows Phone?

I have been working on a small application to allow users to add some customization to tiles of websites that they choose to pin to their home screen. With this small web app you will be able to set some main text, sub text, font size, and color to the website tile that is on your homescreen. With this you will be able to easily make a pinned website tile match your theme or make it a color that stands out.

Future Features

I would eventually like to add more features to this web app like; font selectors, image upload, and more colors to choose from. For now you can use this tool at Custom Tiles. This has mostly just been tested on my HTC Titan and recently the CSS file was erased somehow so I had to redo it without as much testing. Please submit any bugs or requests in the comments below.

Getting Started With SASS on Windows

If you have yet to start using a CSS preprocessor then now might be the time to take a look. CSS preprocessors are a great way to add a little bit of logic and code reusability to CSS. CSS preprocessors, like SASS and LESS, will give you things like variables, mixins, and operations. These are all things that are common in most programming languanges but have not been implemented into CSS. As the name suggests a CSS preprocessor will process your code before hand, turning it into valid, usable, and often compressed CSS files.

Is The New #SEO Not Doing SEO? Google Forcing Google+

The Two Current Types of SEO

SEO or search engine optimization has a thin line in it. There is the good SEO that is optimizing your site for search engines with the user still in mind and having good content. Then there is the other SEO that is often paid for which is strictly search engine optimization without caring about giving some value to the end user. Google, Bing, and any other search engine are constantly working toward getting the most relevant data to the user. This can be very difficult because anyone can make a website and submit it to search engines. Google is going to try to ignore SEO as we currently know it. This could make for a huge switch in search results.

Selecting a Domain – Website Setup Part 1

If you aren’t here to nit pick skip the first paragraph.

Now, this can and will be argued about actually being the first part to setting up a website but for what I am doing this is step one.  Technically you should probably have an idea about what you want your website to be and have some goals set.  However, in my case I just want to have a blog site setup where I can write about things once in a while. I get excited about some things that I would love to write about but don’t and other times there are things that I just really think people should see.  I am a web developer by profession and would like to get better with web design so along the life of this site I will be trying to make a wordpress theme or find one I like.
